What is a midterm survey?
The midterm survey is an informal survey that can be implemented by individual instructors or administrators to gauge student opinions throughout a semester. They are often cited as a “best practice” for teaching and learning as can be extremely useful for both instructors and students. These surveys are not meant to take the place of a CIOS and are not administered through the Office of Assessment, though we do offer an example survey below. Further, the Office of Assessment staff are always happy to assist you in designing your own survey or by providing additional midterm survey examples. To implement a midterm survey, we suggest taking advantage of the “Test & Quizzes” tool provided in T-square, though instructors have also used paper forms or websites such as Survey Monkey to fill that same need. Regardless of how you may choose to implement a midterm survey, the feedback provided can be included as a means to improving learning in any classroom environment.
How to Implement
Creating a midterm survey can be easily done with the “Test & Quizzes” Tool using T-Square. T-Square runs on an OIT server and can be used by any faculty at Georgia Tech for academic purposes. See http://tsquare.gatech.edu for more details on T-Square.
Instructions for importing to T-square (more details are available from T-square help if you need them):
- Save this “midterm_survey.xml” file to your computer.
- In T-square, enable the “Tests & Quizzes” tool for your class using the Site Info tab if this tool is not already enabled – once you have selected your course, select the “Site Info” tab in the “Course Tools” bar on the left side of the screen. Then Select the “Edit Tools” button on the top of the window. Then mark the checkbox next to the “Tests & Quizzes” option and press the “Continue” button.
- Next, go to the “Tests & Quizzes” tool for your class and create a new assessment. Give the new assessment a name, and use the “import button” to navigate to the xml file you saved to your computer a moment ago. Once it is imported, go to the “Pending Assessments” and click “settings” under the name of the file you have just imported. There you will see options for setting the dates, whether it is anonymous or not, etc. Once you have set the assessment up the way you want you can publish it for the students to use.
